Lagavulin 16 is a defining bottling for the distillery. This Islay single malt matures for at least 16 years in oak casks. Its pronounced peat smoke meets deep sweetness and dry maritime notes. Lagavulin’s smoky character comes from malt treated with peat at Port Ellen Maltings. The distillery uses a particularly slow distillation process, which contributes to the complexity of its whisky.

This distillery bottling contains 0.7 litres of whisky at 43% alcohol and comes in gift packaging. In 2025, Lagavulin 16 received gold awards at both the San Francisco World Spirits Competition and the New York International Spirits Competition. It can be enjoyed neat or with a little still water at room temperature.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, pronounced peat smoke, iodine and seaweed meet deep sweetness.
• Palate: The palate brings dry peat smoke and a distinct yet gentle sweetness. Salty maritime notes and a little wood follow.
• Finish: The finish is long, with peat smoke lingering alongside salt and seaweed.

Distillery/Bottler:

Lagavulin Distillery stands on a bay in southern Islay, near the ruins of Dunyvaig Castle. John Johnston officially founded it in 1816, although evidence of whisky production at the site goes back further. The malt used for Lagavulin acquires its smoky character from peat at Port Ellen Maltings. The distillery uses a comparatively slow distillation process before its whisky goes into casks to mature.
