Special Features:
Nectere joins Lindores Abbey’s revised core range as a single malt matured entirely in sherry casks. The distillery combines four different cask types: Oloroso, Pedro Ximénez, Amontillado and Palo Cortado. Using all four sherry styles together in a single malt is unusual. The name is derived from the Latin “conectere”, meaning to link, bind and connect.
The interplay of the four types of sherry cask gives the whisky dark fruit, warm spices, nutty notes and depth of flavour. Nectere has a mahogany hue in the glass and is bottled at 47.2% in a 0.7-litre bottle. No colouring is added, and the whisky is not chill-filtered.
Tasting Notes:
- Nose: The nose combines dark sugar syrup, red apples, vanilla cream, raisins and cinnamon.
- Palate: The whisky is velvety, balanced and layered on the palate. Mild molasses and sticky-sweet dark fruits meet chocolate-covered raisins, nutty macaroons, toffee, pecans and warming spices.
- Finish: The long finish is creamy, with lingering warmth from nutmeg and cinnamon.
Distillery/Bottler:
Lindores Abbey Distillery is located in Newburgh, Fife, on the grounds of the historic abbey. An Exchequer Roll from 1494 mentions the Lindores monk Brother John Cor, who was instructed by King James IV to turn eight bolls of malt into aqua vitae. This entry is regarded as the earliest written evidence of whisky production in Scotland. Lindores Abbey Farm came into the possession of the McKenzie Smith family in 1913. Drew and Helen McKenzie Smith later spent around two decades working to bring distillation back to this historic site. Construction of the new distillery began in 2016, the first new make spirit flowed in 2017, and the first modern Lindores Single Malt Scotch Whisky was released in 2021.
The distillery uses locally grown barley and ferments in traditional wooden washbacks. A 117-hour fermentation encourages aromatic development before a large wash still and two smaller stills known as the “Sister Spirit Stills” take over. The additional copper contact during the second distillation contributes to a clean, refined spirit.
