Special Features:

A four-year PX sherry finish shapes this Mortlach from the Mission Gold series. Distilled in 2008, the single malt initially matured in an ex-bourbon hogshead. It spent its final four years of maturation in a barrique previously used for Pedro Ximénez sherry from Bodegas Ximénez-Spínola. The bottling thus combines a long initial maturation with an extended second maturation in a sherry cask.

Murray McDavid bottled the whisky in 2026 at eighteen years old and 54.3% alcohol. This limited release comprises 244 bottles of 0.7 litres and comes in gift packaging. The whisky is neither chill-filtered nor coloured.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, baked apple and dried apricots combine with a waxy note.
• Palate: The whisky feels dense and malty on the palate, with soft toffee and peach.
• Finish: The finish recalls brioche and syrup waffles, accompanied by buttery spice.

Distillery/Bottler:

Mortlach was founded in 1823 as Dufftown's first legal distillery. The distillery developed under George Cowie and later his son Alexander; by 1897, its number of stills had increased from three to six. Alexander introduced the unusual distillation process known as 2.81-times distillation and traditional worm-tub condensers. These methods shape the robust, meaty house style that earned Mortlach the nickname Beast of Dufftown.

Independent bottler Murray McDavid was founded in 1994 by London wine merchants Mark Reynier and Simon Coughlin, together with Gordon Wright of Springbank. The founding team's wine expertise is reflected in its selection of casks previously used for wine to mature whisky. Today, Murray McDavid is based at Coleburn Distillery in Speyside. The Mission Gold series brings together rare, long-matured bottlings; this Mortlach focuses on the combination of a robust spirit and several years of PX finishing.
