Special Features:
The 21-year-old Tamdhu is the oldest expression in the distillery’s core range. It is released annually in a limited worldwide allocation of 12,000 bottles and bottled at 47.5%.
The single malt spends its entire 21-year maturation in Oloroso sherry casks. Tamdhu combines predominantly European oak with American oak, as well as first-fill and refill casks. This selection brings together sweetness on the initial palate with an increasingly dry and spicy impression.
The whisky retains its natural colour and is not chill-filtered. Its royal-green gift packaging uses Spanish-Moorish design elements to evoke the southern Spanish origins of the sherry casks, while a drawer inside contains a tasting booklet.
Tasting Notes:
- Nose: The nose brings together sherry oak, sultanas and chocolate with warm cinnamon porridge. Toffee, mocha and marzipan add further sweet and roasted impressions.
- Palate: On the palate, the whisky recalls rich fruitcake with juicy, sherry-soaked raisins and candied orange. Gentle oak gives the initial sweetness an increasingly dry and spicy structure.
- Finish: The long finish develops lingering waves of oak and spice before sweet fruit and a delicate note of clove remain.
Distillery/Bottler:
Tamdhu was built in 1897 by a group of local entrepreneurs on the banks of the River Spey. The first cask shipment followed in 1898. The distillery is now owned by Ian Macleod Distillers.
The distillery uses local spring water and consistently centres its bottling style on full maturation in Oloroso sherry casks. Casks made from European and American oak are prepared in Jerez and then brought to Speyside. This approach is particularly evident in the 21-year-old single malt, whose long maturation, different oak types and combination of first-fill and refill casks jointly shape its sherry, fruit and spice character.
