Ezra 99 was launched in January 2021 as a stronger counterpart to the classic 90-proof Ezra Brooks. The number 99 denotes its American proof rating and corresponds to 49.5% ABV. The bourbon is matured for four years and, despite its higher bottling strength, is not bottled at cask strength.

The mash bill consists of 78% corn, 10% rye and 12% malted barley. The rye gives the bourbon its spicy character. After maturation in American white oak, the whiskey is charcoal filtered, contributing to its smooth, mellow finish.

The cork-sealed 0.75-litre bottle displays the number 99 prominently on its label. Its flavour combines caramel, vanilla and chocolate with the spice of a rye-forward bourbon style.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: The nose reveals light aromas of charred oak, vanilla and caramel, accompanied by a delicate peanut note.
• Palate: Creamy caramel, vanilla and light brown sugar come to the fore on the palate. Oak, white pepper and peanut add spicy and nutty accents.
• Finish: In the short, gently warming finish, caramel and vanilla give way to dry oak, leather, peanut shells and rye spice. Oak and peanut linger at the end.

Distillery/Bottler:

The Ezra Brooks brand was created by Frank Silverman in 1957 and was initially bottled at the Hoffman Distilling Company in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky. Luxco acquired the brand in 1993; today, it is part of the Lux Row Distillers portfolio.

Lux Row Distillers began operating in Bardstown in spring 2018. The distillery works with both a wheat-forward and a rye-forward bourbon mash bill; Ezra Brooks belongs to the rye-forward range. Master Distiller John Rempe helped develop Ezra 99 and oversees the company’s bourbon portfolio.
