Special Features:
Batch #5 is the fifth release in the limited 10-Year-Old series, through which Jack Daniel's introduced its first whiskey with a ten-year age statement in more than a century in 2021. This limited bottling is numbered. It matured for ten years and is presented at 48.5% alcohol in a bottle containing 0.7 litres, with a gift box.
During the long maturation, the barrels were moved from warmer to cooler areas within the warehouses. This allowed the distillery to harness the effects of changing temperatures and extend maturation without exposing the whiskey to the most intense warehouse conditions throughout the entire ten years. The series' historic design also incorporates a hand-drawn cartouche found on earlier age-stated Jack Daniel's bottlings.
The mash bill consists of 80% corn, 12% malted barley and 8% rye. Before barrel maturation, the distillate trickles through a layer of sugar maple charcoal approximately three metres deep. This charcoal treatment is one of the defining production steps of Tennessee whiskey. Batch #5 is non-chill filtered and contains no added colouring. Despite its oak-forward profile, the smoke remains restrained and appears only as a subtle nuance.
Tasting Notes:
- Nose: Charred oak takes the lead on the nose. Butterscotch, gentle maple sweetness, flambéed banana and baking spices with a hint of clove follow, while tobacco completes the mature aromatic profile.
- Palate: On the palate, banana and further fruit notes combine with cocoa, rye spice and black pepper. Charred oak, dried tobacco leaf and deeply browned butter give the whiskey spicy, oak-forward depth.
- Finish: The finish is distinctly dry and shaped by pepper, charred oak and baking spices. Leather, dried tobacco and dark caramel round it out.
Distillery/Bottler:
The Jack Daniel Distillery is located in Lynchburg, Tennessee. Registered in 1866, it is regarded as the oldest registered distillery in the United States and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Jack Daniel once moved the operation to a site by a limestone cave whose spring provides iron-free water.
A defining feature of the distillery is its treatment of the fresh distillate with charcoal made from hard sugar maple. Before maturation, the whiskey slowly seeps through a layer of charcoal approximately three metres deep. For Batch #5, the distillery combines this traditional process with the deliberate management of barrel storage over ten years.
