Rye accounts for 70% of the mash in this single-barrel whiskey, alongside 18% corn and 12% malted barley. The spirit undergoes charcoal treatment before maturing in new, charred American white oak barrels made at the distillery’s own cooperage.

For its Single Barrel Collection, the distillery selects barrels from the upper levels of its warehouses. Seasonal temperature changes in Lynchburg have a particularly strong effect on maturation there. Because each release comes from one barrel, its character can vary from barrel to barrel.

With Single Barrel Rye, Jack Daniel's released its first fully matured rye in 2016. The distillery had previously introduced Unaged Rye in 2012 and Rested Rye in 2014. Its rye mash bill was its first new grain recipe in more than a century.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: The nose brings caramel, banana bread, toasted grain and cherry pie, accompanied by light peppery spice.
• Palate: On the palate, the whiskey is medium- to full-bodied. Toasted, nutty grain and toasted dark bread combine with banana chips, oak, charcoal and peppery spice.
• Finish: The long, dry finish carries toasted oak, nuts, vanilla and charcoal, with a hint of spice.

Distillery/Bottler:

The Jack Daniel Distillery is in Lynchburg, Tennessee. Jack Daniel chose the site for the iron-free water from a cave spring. Nathan “Nearest” Green taught him much of what he knew about distilling and became the distillery’s first Master Distiller. Members of both families still work there today. The distillery has belonged to Brown-Forman since 1956.

For Single Barrel Rye, the distillery uses this spring water and its proprietary yeast, which it also uses for its Tennessee Whiskey. The Jack Daniel Distillery makes and bottles the rye in Lynchburg.
