Maker's Mark Cask Strength puts the distillery's wheat-forward bourbon in the spotlight at cask strength. This 0.7-litre bottle contains whisky from Batch 23-06 at 54.75% ABV, within the producer's stated cask-strength range of 107 to 114 proof. For each batch in the Cask Strength range, the distillery combines whisky from 24 barrels, all aged for at least seven years. Each small batch has its own character while remaining true to the Maker's Mark style. The distillery then bottles the combined whisky without adding water or removing any constituents.

At Maker's Mark, red winter wheat replaces rye and contributes to the bourbon's soft, sweet character. Cask Strength brings salted caramel and warm vanilla together with toasted oak, dark cherry and spices. Dark chocolate and espresso round out its full, enveloping and harmonious finish. Batch 23-06 also has sweet pastry notes and a delicate hint of red fruit. The whisky is not chill-filtered and contains no added colouring.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, vanilla, grain and oak mingle with sweet pastry; a little alcohol is also perceptible.
• Palate: On the palate, spicy oak and sweet, buttery biscuit notes meet a delicate hint of red fruit.
• Finish: The finish is long and warming, fading out sweetly with a light oak note.

Distillery/Bottler:

Maker's Mark Distillery, PBC produces and bottles this bourbon at Star Hill Farm in Loretto, Kentucky. Maker's Mark is part of the Suntory Global Spirits portfolio. Bill Samuels Sr. began establishing the distillery there in 1952; in developing his bourbon, he replaced rye with red winter wheat. The distillery uses water from its limestone-rich surroundings and a yeast culture maintained for decades. It distils twice and determines when to bottle by taste rather than by the calendar alone.

To encourage more even maturation, Maker's Mark moves its barrels by hand within the warehouse. Margie Samuels designed the bottle and created the name; each bottle still receives its red wax seal by hand in Loretto.
