Uncle Nearest 1856 Premium was the brand’s first release in 2017. Today’s Legacy Era blend also contains whiskey from Uncle Nearest’s own barrels and is bottled at 100 proof, or 50% ABV.

For the original production, Uncle Nearest worked with two Tennessee distilleries. Locally sourced grain, charcoal treatment and maturation in new American oak barrels were part of its approach at the time. Today’s release is not chill-filtered and contains no added colouring.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, baled hay and dried grass mingle with pumpkin seeds, ripe peach, apricot, caramel corn and sweet maple syrup.
• Palate: Spiced caramel comes first on the palate. Maple syrup, dried fruit and floral notes follow, while the sweetness and spice recall oatmeal raisin cookies.
• Finish: The long, full finish remains pleasantly sweet, with vanilla emerging as the spice fades.

Distillery/Bottler:

The brand honours Nathan “Nearest” Green, regarded as the first known African American master distiller. He helped develop the charcoal treatment that shaped Tennessee whiskey. Opened in 2019, Nearest Green Distillery in Shelbyville is a working distillery with barrel warehouses. Uncle Nearest, Inc. owns the brand, and Fawn Weaver leads the distillery.
