Master Blender Victoria Eady Butler creates each batch of 1884 Small Batch. She is a fifth-generation descendant of Nathan “Nearest” Green. According to the brand, 1884 was the last year Green filled casks with his own whiskey for maturation; the number commemorates that year. The whiskey is bottled at 93 proof, or 46.5% alcohol.

Honey and brown sugar open its sweet, spicy profile, followed by caramel and chocolate, then cinnamon, oak and maple syrup in the long finish. The whiskey is not chill-filtered and contains no added colouring.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, honey and warm brown sugar meet cedarwood, orange peel and tobacco blossom, with accents of ground ginger and white pepper.
• Palate: On the palate, caramel is accompanied by spiced wood tannins, followed by baking chocolate, cigar leaf, nougat and cinnamon.
• Finish: The finish is long and smooth. Cinnamon persists alongside lingering dark chocolate, oak tannin and maple syrup.

Distillery/Bottler:

The Nearest Green Distillery opened in Shelbyville, Tennessee, in 2019. For 1884 Small Batch, Uncle Nearest handles distillation, maturation and bottling itself. The brand belongs to Uncle Nearest, Inc.

The distillery is named in honour of Nathan “Nearest” Green, the first known African American master distiller. His work is associated with the Lincoln County Process, in which whiskey is filtered through sugar maple charcoal.
