Special Features: The Laizhou Finest Select is an innovative single malt whisky from the Laizhou Distillery in Sichuan Province, China. The distillery was founded in 2021 and has quickly made a name for itself with its experimental cask aging and the use of traditional Chinese ingredients. This whisky matures in a combination of Chinese liqueur wine casks, new American oak casks, Pedro Ximénez sherry casks, and former bourbon casks, resulting in a complex and unique flavor profile.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: Freshly cut sweet-sour apples, sugary almonds, and buttery toasted white bread. Gummy bears and wine gums mingle with fresh and candied orange and lemon peel. Baking spices and dried apricots develop in the background.
• Palate: Zesty and sweet at first, with lemon peel and sour apples, balanced with candied peel and butter toffee. Dark oak appears in the background, accompanied by cherries and sultanas. Spiced biscuit cake builds in the middle, complemented by fruity candies, grass, green leaves, and red apple skin.
• Finish: Spiced apple biscuit cake with candied lemon slices and a hint of youthful green oak.

Distillery/Bottler: The Laizhou Distillery is located in Qionglai, Sichuan, the historic first stop of the Silk Road west of Chengdu. Before building the distillery, the founders visited over 100 distilleries worldwide to integrate the best practices of the global whisky industry. Under the guidance of distiller Hao Wu, trained at Heriot-Watt, the distillery uses a combination of pot and column stills to produce both malt and grain whisky. The cask aging takes place in a variety of casks, including former bourbon, sherry, wine, and tequila casks, as well as, for the first time in whisky production, casks previously used for Huangjiu (Chinese liqueur wine).
