Special features: The Black Art Edition 10.1 is the tenth release of Bruichladdich's secret Black Art series. Distilled in 1993 and aged for 29 years in carefully selected oak casks, this single malt was bottled in 2022. The exact cask composition remains a closely guarded secret of Head Distiller Adam Hannett. Bottled at natural cask strength of 45.1% ABV, without chill filtration and without coloring, this whisky presents itself in its purest form.
Tasting Notes:
- Nose: Inviting aromas of toasted oak, chocolate, cedarwood, and leather, accompanied by subtle notes of cinnamon and clove. Fruity nuances of sweet apricot jam, ripe melon, cherries, and blackcurrants unfold, complemented by a hint of citrus fruits, gooseberries dipped in honey, and floral accents of geranium and honeysuckle. A light touch of iodine and leather rounds off the bouquet.
- Palate: The taste opens with malt sugar, ginger cookies, and lemon tart with meringue, followed by sweet apricot jam and nutty marzipan. The toasted oak brings forth flavors of chocolate, vanilla, and fruits in syrup. Raisins, plums, and melons enrich the fruit basket. Over time, notes of iodine, coconut, as well as spicy ginger and cinnamon emerge. The texture is incredibly soft and velvety.
- Finish: An exceptionally smooth finish with sweet fudge, ripe fruits, and a hint of tobacco and ginger leaves a lasting impression.
Distillery/Bottler: The Bruichladdich Distillery, founded in 1881 by brothers Robert, William, and John Gourlay Harvey, is located on the coast of Loch Indaal on the Isle of Islay. Known for their unpeated single malts, the distillery uses traditional Victorian equipment, including an open 7-ton mash tun and six wooden fermentation vessels made of Douglas fir. The distillery places great importance on transparency and sustainability, bottling its whiskies directly on the island.
