Special features: Port Askaig Cask Strength #02-2024 is a small batch cask strength whisky, sourced from no more than 60 casks from an Islay distillery on the northeast coast. The combination of 62% sherry casks (PX butts, Oloroso butts, and HHDs), refill butts, hogheads, and a small percentage of bourbon barrels gives this whisky complex layers of dark sweetness, tangy fruit, and warm spice, blended with typical Islay smoke. The origin of the malts remains a closely guarded secret, making each bottling an exciting mystery malt.
Tasting Notes:
- Nose: Initially, fresh lemons and smoky notes of grilled sausage dominate. These are followed by aromas of espresso, light licorice, syrup, and semi-sweet dark chocolate. Sultanas and warm dates combine with rich, dark coal smoke.
- Palate: Rich campfire smoke and toffee meet bitter lemon and tangerine peel. Ginger spice complements notes of dark chocolate and star anise. The peat unfolds a classic medicinal Islay note, accompanied by hints of cherry and dried raspberry.
- Finish: Long-lasting with cocoa nibs and coal smoke, while lemon oil and raspberry leaf tea leave a pleasant dryness.
