Special Features:

Tea and betel leaves give this dry gin its distinctive character. The Nilgiris, the “Blue Mountains” in southern India's Western Ghats, provide both the inspiration and some of the botanicals. Amrut uses hand-picked tea from the region's plantations. Betel leaves, also known as paan, add floral notes to the recipe and contribute to its texture.

The ten botanicals are juniper, coriander seeds, lemongrass, angelica root, orris root, betel leaves, cinnamon, mace, nutmeg and tea. Imported juniper joins ingredients from southern India. Maceration and distillation take place in locally made copper stills in Bengaluru, producing small batches. The gin is bottled at 42.8% alcohol in a 0.7-litre bottle.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: Citrusy juniper leads the nose, while spices remain in the background. Delicate hints of brewed tea mingle with the floral nuances of betel leaves.
• Palate: The gin feels smooth and almost buttery on the palate. Juniper combines with unripe mango and pronounced citrus notes. Peppery heat and a hint of betel leaf add further accents.
• Finish: The finish is long and dry, retaining the gin's powerful character.

Distillery/Bottler:

Amrut was founded as Amrut Laboratories in 1948 by Shri J.N. Radhakrishna in Bangalore, now Bengaluru. The company initially developed spirits for the Indian market and later became a pioneer of Indian single malt. In 2004, Amrut introduced its single malt in Glasgow. With Nilgiris, the distillery applies its small-batch distillation approach to gin, placing tea, betel leaves and southern Indian spices at its heart.
