The Hearts Collection 1993 showcases a single Appleton Estate rum style after 29 years of tropical ageing in Jamaica. This Single Marque consists entirely of pot-still rum: rather than combining different distillate styles, 13 casks of the same style were selected. The rum was distilled in 1993 and bottled in 2022 at 63% alcohol.

Joy Spence and Luca Gargano selected casks numbered 413487 to 413499 for this edition. Together, they yielded 3,600 bottles. The total congener content—the accompanying compounds in the distillate—is 1,456 grams per 100 litres of pure alcohol. The rum comes in a 0.7-litre bottle with gift packaging.

Alongside tropical fruit, nutmeg and cinnamon shape the character. Mint, caramel, toasted oak and vanilla complement this spicy side.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: The nose reveals delicate notes of cinnamon and nutmeg. With air, honey-sweet vanilla, oak and orange blossom emerge. A pronounced estery note recalls acetone and overripe pineapple. A hint of peach complements the bold, dusty oak.
• Palate: On the palate, the initial alcoholic, acetone-like impression gives way to grilled pineapple, fig, a little banana and mangosteen with a suggestion of lychee. Bold ginger and vanilla then take over.
• Finish: The finish is long, dry and oak-driven. Allspice and anise complement the powerful aftertaste, accompanied by a subtle oak bitterness.

Distillery/Bottler:

Appleton Estate lies in the Nassau Valley in Jamaica’s interior, surrounded by limestone hills. For its pot-still distillates, the distillery uses all-copper Forsyth stills designed specifically for the estate.

Appleton Estate’s current production methods involve molasses, limestone-filtered spring water and a proprietary yeast strain passed down through generations. Its range includes both pot-still and column-still distillates. A marque denotes a distinct distillate style with its own characteristic aroma and flavour. The Hearts Collection focuses on individual pot-still marques and began in 2020 with Appleton Estate’s first vintage bottlings of this kind.

Joy Spence was appointed Appleton Estate’s Master Blender in 1997, becoming the first woman to hold this position in the spirits industry. She works with Luca Gargano on the Hearts Collection. This rum was produced by J. Wray & Nephew Ltd. and bottled by Velier S.p.A.
