The Beithir's Tale is the third and final chapter of Ardbeg Anthology. This 15-year-old Islay single malt matured in bourbon casks made from air-dried wood that was heavily toasted and then lightly charred. The release takes its name from the Beithir, a serpentine creature of Scottish folklore.

The whisky is bottled at 46% in a 0.7-litre bottle with gift packaging. It is not chill-filtered and contains no added colouring.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, the whisky is pungent, oily and spicy. Dark sugar syrup sits alongside creosote and smoked herbs, while roasted apple and raisins bring sweetness. A little water brings out eucalyptus and menthol, followed by fennel and pine.
• Palate: On the palate, the whisky is balanced: a tingling mouthfeel brings peat smoke together with coffee grounds and blackcurrants. Sweet lemon balm mingles with smoked mandarins; a sharp smoky note follows.
• Finish: The long, meandering finish brings delicate vanilla and smoked butter.

Distillery/Bottler:

Ardbeg Distillery stands on Islay's south coast and produces this single malt as an official distillery bottling. Its history dates back to 1815. After periods of closure, The Glenmorangie Company bought the distillery in 1997 and resumed production. Today, Ardbeg is part of the LVMH group through Moët Hennessy.

Ardbeg uses heavily peated malt. A purifier on the spirit still returns some of the heavier vapours and increases their contact with copper; the distillation thus helps bring smoky, fruity and sweet impressions together.
