Special Features:

The first-fill Oloroso sherry butt numbered 02/453/1 defines this Rare Reserve single-cask bottling. Ardbeg distilled the whisky on 25 April 1991. After 33 years of maturation, Signatory Vintage bottled it on 7 October 2024 at its natural cask strength of 52.6%. The cask yielded 398 bottles of 0.7 litres each.

Powerful smoke and maritime peat notes sit alongside mature fruit and sherry-cask notes. Raisins, dark chocolate and delicate spice add further depth. The whisky contains no added colouring and is not chill-filtered; it comes in a premium box.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: Flint notes appear first alongside powerful smoke. Tobacco and leather follow, then dark chocolate, espresso and a delicate cigar note. Water brings out meaty notes and black truffle.
• Palate: On the palate, smoky caramel cream, raisins, coffee and dark chocolate mingle with delicate spice, a salty sherry note and maritime peat notes. Water brings citrus, seawater and black pepper more clearly to the fore.
• Finish: The finish is long and dry-edged, with lingering coffee, chocolate, citrus, herbs, tobacco and leather.

Distillery/Bottler:

Ardbeg makes single malt on the south coast of Islay. Founded in 1815, the distillery ceased production in 1981 and resumed distilling on a small scale in 1989. This whisky was distilled in 1991, before Ardbeg closed again later that year; sustained production did not resume until 1997.

Signatory Vintage is the independent bottler of this Ardbeg. Andrew Symington founded the company with his brother in 1988. Since acquiring Edradour Distillery in 2002, Signatory has expanded its premises near Pitlochry; selecting individual casks remains central to its work. Within the Rare Reserve, this bottling belongs to the Symington's Choice range.
