The single malt matures for ten years predominantly in bourbon casks. Part of the whisky then receives a finish of around nine months in first-fill Oloroso sherry casks before the whiskies are married. Its aromatic range extends from candied citrus fruit, honey, liquorice and butterscotch to sweet oak, apple, hazelnut and cinnamon. Fresh orchard fruit, creamy vanilla and dried fruit broaden the spectrum.

Lochranza Distillery, in the north of the Isle of Arran, began production in 1995. The quality of the local water played a central role in the choice of location. The water for Arran Single Malt comes from Loch na Davie in the hills above the distillery. Within a compact area, the island combines characteristics of the Highlands, Lowlands, the Scottish mainland and the western islands. Since 2019, its sister distillery Lagg in the south has complemented Lochranza’s unpeated Arran style with heavily peated single malt.
At Lochranza, wort made from malted barley is fermented with yeast in wooden washbacks. The fermented liquid is then distilled twice in copper pot stills. The selection of oak casks previously used for bourbon or sherry determines the subsequent maturation and the character of each bottling.
