Japanese sencha, Chinese green tea and grapefruit join the nine botanicals of the classic Beefeater recipe in Beefeater 24. Its twelve ingredients comprise juniper, coriander seeds, angelica root and seeds, orange, lemon and grapefruit peels, orris root, almond, liquorice root and the two teas. This London Dry Gin thus builds on its juniper backbone with additional citrus and tea notes.

The number 24 refers to the maceration time: the botanicals steep in neutral grain spirit for a full day before the mixture is distilled in copper stills. A narrower portion of the distillation run is selected for Beefeater 24 than for classic Beefeater. This earlier, more selective cut is intended to preserve the fresh, volatile aromas of grapefruit and tea leaves.

The red glass bottle features embossed depictions of the twelve botanicals. Its taller shape, reminiscent of a London brick, makes it easier to grip, while the label's 24-degree slant echoes the maceration time. Compared with the previous packaging, the redesigned version uses 22% less glass, 30% less aluminium and 90% less plastic in the closure and back label. The recipe remained unchanged when the design was updated. The gin is offered at 45% in a bottle containing 0.7 litres.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: The nose reveals delicate aromas of pine, lavender, tea and grapefruit peel.
• Palate: The gin feels smooth and slightly sweet on the palate. Pine-like juniper comes first, followed by grapefruit, tea, liquorice and violet. Notes of sweetened lemon peel and white pepper overlay these flavours.
• Finish: The long finish stays fresh, supported by pine-like juniper. Tea tannins give the lingering flavours a slightly astringent structure.

Distillery/Bottler:

Beefeater makes its gin in London's Kennington district, near The Oval cricket ground. The classic recipe dates back to James Burrough in 1863. The brand has belonged to Pernod Ricard since 2005. Steeping the botanicals before distillation is part of the house's production method; for Beefeater 24, this process also includes the additional teas.

Desmond Payne developed Beefeater 24 after almost two years of experimenting with tea as an ingredient in gin. A historical connection provided further inspiration: the father of Beefeater founder James Burrough was a London tea merchant who supplied the royal household. Launched in October 2008, Beefeater 24 extends the house's classic style with the two green teas and grapefruit.
