Maturation in first-fill bourbon and sherry casks shapes Benromach 15 Year Old. After previously holding bourbon or sherry, these casks are used to mature Scotch whisky for the first time. Over fifteen years, the single malt develops a combination of fruity sherry notes, dark chocolate, spicy oak and subtle smoke.

Its lightly peaty style draws on an older Speyside tradition that Benromach revived under Gordon & MacPhail. Smoke accompanies the fruit and cask notes without defining the whisky on its own. This distillery bottling is offered at 43% alcohol with no added colouring. The bottle contains 0.7 litres and comes in gift packaging.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: The nose opens with sweet toffee, followed by cracked black pepper and peat smoke. Forest berries, dark chocolate and dried banana emerge over time.
• Palate: The whisky feels creamy and sweet on the palate. Ripe apples meet an underlying note of charred oak. Dark chocolate then develops, followed by roasted malt and orange peel. A hint of smoke accompanies these impressions.
• Finish: The medium-length finish remains creamy, with gentle smoke and dried fruit lingering.

Distillery/Bottler:

Benromach is located in Forres, in Scotland’s Speyside region. Construction of the distillery began in 1898; its subsequent history included several changes of ownership and periods of closure. Gordon & MacPhail acquired the closed distillery in 1993 and renewed its production equipment. Benromach resumed production in 1998. The aim was to create a fruity, medium-bodied Speyside whisky with a light smoky character, a style once widespread in the region.

The distillery’s production methods include fermentation lasting three to five days in larchwood vessels. Both brewer’s and distiller’s yeasts are used. The water comes from the Chapelton spring. Distillation takes place in two copper pot stills, while traditional dunnage warehouses are used for cask maturation. These methods underpin Benromach’s whiskies; this particular fifteen-year-old bottling matures in first-fill bourbon and sherry casks.
