For its anniversary edition, Signatory Vintage selected a Bowmore from refill Sherry Butt #3882. The whisky was distilled on 21 June 1972 and bottled on 8 June 2018, at 45 years old. 30th Anniversary refers to the independent bottler's company anniversary, not the whisky's age. The single cask yielded 246 bottles at 46.7% ABV. The black anniversary box contains two Glencairn glasses. The whisky has no added colouring and was not chill-filtered.

The long maturation allows fruit to come forward alongside the Islay peat without displacing the smoke. Orange, fig and passion fruit are joined by mature oak, chocolate, citrus and a hint of sherry; fruit compote, dried fruit and cinnamon add to the spicy character. Camphor and incense bring cool accents.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: The nose offers wood, orange, fig and passion fruit. With a little air, gently integrated peat smoke emerges. Chocolate, citrus fruit, a hint of sherry and warming oak round out the aroma.
• Palate: On the palate, elegant peat meets exotic fruit. Medicinal peat, a hint of cinnamon and smoke accompany more fruit, fruit compote and dried fruit.
• Finish: The long finish retains peat, a cool hint of camphor and incense. Smoke and fruity and spicy notes linger too.

Distillery/Bottler:

Bowmore has made single malt on Islay since 1779 and is regarded as the island's oldest distillery. It stands by Loch Indaal and includes the historic No.1 Vaults on the shore. Bowmore made the whisky in this bottling, while Signatory Vintage selected the cask and bottled the matured whisky.

Andrew Symington founded Signatory Vintage with his brother in 1988. His interest in individual whisky casks grew into an independent bottling business. By 2007, Signatory had moved its operation to the Edradour distillery site in Pitlochry. There, the company focuses on individually selected casks. This Bowmore bottling is part of the edition celebrating the company's 30th anniversary.
