For the Re/Define edition, Bruichladdich combines whisky from 80% bourbon casks with whisky from 20% Oloroso and Pedro Ximénez sherry casks. This 21-year-old single malt was distilled from 100% traceable Scottish barley, then matured and bottled on Islay. Created for global travel retail, it is bottled at 50% without chill filtration or added colouring.

Long maturation leaves Bruichladdich’s floral and citrus character intact alongside dried fruit, leather and spice. American oak contributes vanilla, toffee and honey, while the sherry casks add dried fruit, leather and spice. A restrained maritime note rounds out the whisky. Developed with James Cropper, the coloured moulded-paper-fibre shell fits the shape of the bottle. It uses no adhesive and is fully recyclable.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: The nose offers toast, dried apricots, berries and plums. Almond paste and a creamy note sit alongside pronounced malt.
• Palate: The whisky feels smooth and almost oily on the palate. Nutmeg and a little clove appear first, followed by fennel seeds and ripe fruit. Beeswax, raisin bread and black tea add further flavour.
• Finish: The medium-long to long finish combines desiccated coconut with oak and bitter orange peel.

Distillery/Bottler:

The Harvey brothers founded Bruichladdich in 1881 at Loch Indaal on Islay. The sloping site was incorporated into the production process, and the tall, narrow-necked stills remain a defining feature of its methods. After the distillery closed in 1994, Mark Reynier, Simon Coughlin and Jim McEwan brought it back into operation in 2001, retaining much of its historic equipment.

Bruichladdich ferments slowly in wooden washbacks and distils slowly in its tall stills. The distillery uses traceable barley and matures and bottles its whiskies on Islay. It has been part of the Rémy Cointreau group since 2012. This 21-year-old whisky is bottled by the distillery itself.
