Special Features:
This Bunnahabhain explores the heavily peated side of the Islay distillery. Gordon & MacPhail matured the single malt for ten years and bottled it at 43% for the Discovery range. The range groups its whiskies into three flavour profiles: Sherry, Smoky and Bourbon. This Bunnahabhain belongs to the smoke-led Smoky profile.
Sherry cask maturation combines here with a bright, citrus-led, maritime profile rather than an exclusively rich dried-fruit sweetness. Vanilla, toffee and light fruitcake notes complement the smoke, while candied citrus fruit and liquorice add further accents. The whisky is bottled without added colouring in a 0.7-litre bottle and comes in a gift tube.
Tasting Notes:
- Nose: On the nose, sweet vanilla cream and meringue meet the zesty note of lemon cream. Freshly cut grass, seaweed and brine add maritime and green impressions. Light peat smoke accompanies the aromas.
- Palate: On the palate, candied limes and lemons combine with cooked pears and currants. Velvety milk chocolate notes develop into stronger leather tones, complemented by a hint of liquorice.
- Finish: The finish is long and smooth. Delicate woody notes, tobacco and a smoky impression of campfire embers linger.
Distillery/Bottler:
Bunnahabhain stands on the Sound of Islay. Unlike many other distilleries on the island, it produces mainly unpeated spirit, alongside smaller quantities of peated spirit. This Discovery bottling therefore offers a different perspective on the distillery from its predominantly unpeated house style.
Gordon & MacPhail traces its roots to the shop opened in Elgin in 1895. The independent bottler does more than select mature whiskies: it pairs spirit from Scottish distilleries with its own casks, prepared to its specifications, and oversees maturation. Cask size, stave thickness and the heat treatment of the wood are among the deliberately specified features. Repeated cask sampling helps determine when a whisky is ready for bottling, with a collection of samples built up over generations providing a basis for comparison.
