Coloma Coffee Smoked brings together rum maturation and coffee roasting at Hacienda Coloma. The molasses-based rum matures for eight years in American oak casks. It then receives a four-week finish in casks that previously held Coloma coffee liqueur and were subsequently filled with smoke from the coffee-roasting process. The combination of the casks’ previous contents and roasting smoke gives this edition its distinctive character.

Roasted coffee and smoky oak meet a velvety texture and full body. Bottled at 42% alcohol, the rum comes in a 0.7-litre bottle with dark blue gift packaging. The packaging depicts the hacienda and its plant life.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: The nose reveals roasted coffee and smoky mocha.
• Palate: On the palate, coffee and mocha notes are accompanied by vanilla, caramel, molasses and spices.
• Finish: Smoky mocha remains present throughout the long finish.

Distillery/Bottler:

Hacienda Coloma stands in Fusagasugá in the Colombian Andes, at an altitude of around 1,700 metres. Its colonial-style house dates from the late 19th century. Coffee and rum are closely connected here: ageing the estate’s own coffee liqueur in oak casks inspired the use of these casks to refine rum as well.

Master blenders Sandra Reátegui and Judith Ramírez helped develop the Coloma rums. While the classic range acquires its coffee character through finishing in coffee liqueur casks, Coffee Smoked takes this approach further by adding smoke from coffee roasting. Working with coffee thus also becomes part of cask preparation.
