For this Distillers Edition, a second maturation in Oloroso-conditioned casks adds fruity and spicy notes to Dalwhinnie's honey-led style. The whisky first matures in previously used American and European oak casks. It then moves into recharred American oak casks conditioned with Oloroso. Their new American oak heads receive a particularly heavy char.

Released annually since 1997, the Distillers Edition uses casks selected to complement each distillery's character. This bottling has an alcohol content of 43% and comes in a 0.7-litre bottle with gift packaging.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, honeyed sweetness and light heather notes mingle with nutty, fruity Oloroso aromas. Banana and pineapple are accompanied by hints of fresh apricots, walnuts and a little woody spice.
• Palate: On the palate, the whisky feels creamy, soft and enveloping. Honeyed sweetness is soon followed by warming nutmeg and pepper notes, which balance fruity hints of grapes, peaches and apricots.
• Finish: The fairly long finish remains sweet and malty, with pronounced white pepper spice. It becomes drier as vanilla-accented oak spice lingers.

Distillery/Bottler:

Dalwhinnie stands at an altitude of 355 metres in the Cairngorms National Park. Founded in 1897, the distillery now belongs to Diageo and forms part of the Classic Malts range. Its name derives from the Gaelic word for a meeting place: cattle drovers once gathered here on their way to market.

The production water comes from a mountain spring used exclusively by Dalwhinnie and flows to the distillery via the Allt an t’Sluic. Dalwhinnie uses outdoor worm tubs for condensation. Inside these water-filled vessels, coiled pipes cool the vapours from distillation. The local climate is so cold that the water in the tubs can freeze in winter.
