Long maturation in an American oak ex-bourbon cask defines this Dictador Jerarquía Borbón. Distilled in 1981, the rum spent 39 years in cask. It was bottled from cask ExB-1414 on 21 October 2020 at 43%. The release comprises 300 bottles; this edition comes in gift packaging containing one 0.7-litre bottle.

Jerarquía brings together old rum reserves from the Parra family's collection. The rums in this collection come from a Colombian distillery that has since closed. The name means hierarchy in Spanish. Within the range, Borbón denotes maturation in an ex-bourbon cask; other releases include sherry or port casks.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: Clementine opens the nose, followed by grilled pineapple and ginger cake with cinnamon. Red apple pie and delicate oak spice add further notes.
• Palate: Toffee apple, milk chocolate and red chilli flakes come together on the palate. Custard, vanilla and cherry cola provide a gentle counterpoint. Leather and a hint of sandalwood emerge at the back of the palate.
• Finish: The finish is soft, recalling sweet Moroccan green tea, old leather and vanilla tobacco. Nutty praline notes round out the aftertaste.

Distillery/Bottler:

Destilería Colombiana in Cartagena de Indias was founded in 1913 by the grandfather of future Master Blender Hernan Parra. Parra represents the family's third generation and is responsible for selecting the old casks for Dictador's Vintages Collection. Jerarquía makes part of these stocks, preserved over generations, available.

Dictador's traditional production uses sugar cane honey, or concentrated sugar cane juice, as the fermentation base. Distillation takes place in both copper pot stills and a continuously operating steel column. During maturation, the house replaces evaporation losses with rum from the same vintage. This preserves the vintage identity when the casks are topped up.
