Diplomático Selección de Familia brings together different distillation methods and cask influences. Pot-still rums form the core, complemented by spirits from batch-kettle and column distillation. The selected reserves mature for up to twelve years in American white oak casks, including former bourbon, whisky and sherry casks. The individual rums undergo extensive tasting before the blend is assembled.

The edition was developed with the involvement of the families who owned the company at the time, alongside Maestros Roneros Nelson Hernández and Tito Cordero. Its name recalls their joint cask selection. Fruity, honeyed and woody notes shape the blend, accompanied by toffee, vanilla and spice. The rum is bottled at 43% and can be enjoyed neat or over ice. The 0.7-litre bottle comes in a gift tube.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: The nose combines sugar cane, honey and red fruit. These are followed by subtler notes of vanilla and oak.
• Palate: The rum is smooth and full-bodied on the palate. Wood and plum meet toffee, with a spicy note adding to the flavour.
• Finish: The long, rounded finish carries a light vanilla note.

Distillery/Bottler:

Diplomático is produced by Venezuela's Destilerías Unidas S.A. in La Miel, in the state of Lara. The distillery uses pot stills, a batch-kettle system and columns. These produce rum styles of varying lightness and weight, which are blended into the different bottlings after cask maturation. Combining these spirits is a key part of the house style.

The distillery cultivates its own yeast strain for fermentation. During the subsequent cask maturation, the rums remain separate: the casks are neither topped up nor their contents mixed together during this stage. Only when creating the blend do the blenders combine selected reserves from different distillation methods, cask types and stages of maturity.
