Discarded Banana Peel Rum brings together two ingredients easily overlooked after their first use: rum used to prepare whisky casks and banana peels. The Caribbean base rum was held in casks at William Grant & Sons to impart flavours to the wood for the subsequent finishing of malt whisky. This rum is then repurposed for Discarded and blended with banana peel extract. The extract adds fruity notes and toffee to the rum base.

Bottled at 37.5% alcohol, it can be enjoyed over ice, in a Daiquiri or in a long drink with ginger ale. The packaging complements the reuse of ingredients: all its components are recyclable.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, banana bread and dark sugar syrup meet cinnamon and butterscotch.
• Palate: On the palate, banana bread gives way to banoffee pie, a dessert combining banana and caramel. Caramel-soaked pudding, fudge and milk chocolate-covered raisins add further flavours.
• Finish: Candied ginger leaves a warming impression on the finish.

Discarded Spirits Co. aims to turn previously discarded by-products into drink ingredients. The brand works with materials left over from the coffee, wine and whisky industries. Alongside Banana Peel Rum, its range includes a vermouth flavoured with coffee fruit husks and a vodka made from repurposed winemaking by-products. Its approach therefore begins with the selection of ingredients rather than being limited to packaging.
