Elsburn The Journey 2025 is a twelve-year-old single malt from the Harz region. It matured in first-fill Sherry, Port, Marsala and Malaga casks. Batch 002 was bottled in 2025 at 46% and is limited to 1,050 bottles. The whisky has no added colour and is non-chill-filtered; it comes in a dark wooden box with a rope handle.

The four types of wine cask shape a complex profile of dried fruit, citrus, malt and pastry notes alongside dark caramel. Vanilla, mocha, cocoa and spicy oak complement the fruit, while a subtle touch of wood smoke provides a dry counterpoint.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, multifaceted malt and buttery biscuit dough mingle with dark caramel and toffee. Oily raisins, gentle vanilla and delicately roasted coffee beans complete the full bouquet.
• Palate: The whisky is harmonious and full-bodied on the palate. Raisins and mandarins meet bitter orange, creamy mocha and caramel toffee, while spicy oak and a hint of wood smoke provide structure.
• Finish: The long finish combines apricots, lively citrus fruit and ripe blackberries. Cocoa and caramel provide the final accent.

Distillery/Bottler:

Hercynian Distilling Co. / Hammerschmiede is a spirits producer that has operated in the Harz region since 1985; its own single malt has been part of the range since 2002. The whisky project began in the old forge in Wieda and later moved to the Elsbach valley near Zorge. In September 2019, the former The Glen Els brand was renamed Elsburn.

Hercynian produces Elsburn from malted barley using pot stills, oversees its cask maturation and bottles the whiskies by hand at its own premises. Precise distillation and careful cask management form the basis of its approach.
