Special Features:

Portuguese lemons and labdanum rockrose give Gin Sul its distinctive combination of citrus freshness and delicate resinous nuances. The lemons come from the western Algarve and have particularly aromatic, thick skins. Alongside juniper and coriander, the botanicals include rosemary, lavender, rose petals, cinnamon, cardamom and allspice. Its overall flavour profile combines floral lavender and rose accents with the warm spice of cinnamon, cardamom and allspice, complementing its citrus character.

After distillation, the gin is brought to 43% with soft water from the Lüneburg Heath. It remains unfiltered. The white stoneware bottle protects its contents from light and holds 0.5 litres. Gin Sul can be enjoyed in a gin and tonic, a martini or neat.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: Floral hints accompany the clear citrus aroma. The herbal spice is mild.
• Palate: Juniper takes a back seat to citrus, lavender and rosemary on the palate. The fruity flavour feels light and fresh.
• Finish: Restrained sweetness accompanies delicate cinnamon on the finish.

Distillery/Bottler:

Gin Sul is produced by Altonaer Spirituosen Manufaktur in Hamburg. Stephan Garbe developed the idea out of his close ties to Portugal: he originally wanted to make the gin there, but ultimately brought the project to life in his home city. The choice of botanicals retained the Portuguese connection.

The distillery uses a copper distillation system made by Arnold Holstein, with a 100-litre still pot. Distillation proceeds slowly and in small batches. A botanical basket filled with fresh lemon peel, rosemary and rose petals provides additional flavour extraction: the rising alcohol vapours pick up the aromas of these ingredients.
