Special Features:

A finish in a small Sherry Octave shapes this long-matured Glen Grant from The Octave Premium range. The Single Malt was distilled in 1990 and bottled by Duncan Taylor in 2021 after 30 years of maturation. An Octave holds approximately one eighth of the capacity of a Sherry Butt. This smaller cask has a greater internal wood surface area relative to the volume of liquid, accelerating the interaction between whisky and wood during the finishing period.

Single cask number 4427569 yielded 85 bottles. The whisky was bottled at cask strength of 54.5%, without chill filtration or added colouring. It comes in gift packaging with an accompanying tasting card.

Tasting Notes:

  • Nose: On the nose, the whisky recalls warm, spiced fruit crumble and honey sauce. A hint of slightly waxy oak complements the fresh aromas.
  • Palate: The palate reveals plenty of sherry fruit and malty chocolate reminiscent of Ovaltine. Warming impressions combine with sweet undertones and a lightly leathery note.
  • Finish: The long finish is meaty and dense. Gentle spice and dried-fruit notes persist, while the lingering flavours remain pleasantly sweetish-dry.

Distillery/Bottler:

Glen Grant is located in Rothes, in Scotland’s Speyside region. Brothers John and James Grant founded the distillery in 1840. James “The Major” Grant took over in 1872 and further developed its technical equipment. Tall, slender stills and water-cooled purifiers are distinctive features of its distillation process. This additional purification of the vapours contributes to the light, fruity and floral character of the new-make spirit.

Independent bottler Duncan Taylor is responsible for selecting and bottling this whisky. Founded in 1938, the company experimented with secondary maturation in small casks using both younger and long-matured whiskies. These trials led to the concept behind The Octave. For this range, larger casks are dismantled and their staves used to make smaller Octaves. In the warehouses in Huntly, the second maturation phase is closely monitored before the whisky is bottled at cask strength.
