Oloroso sherry casks give this 21-year-old Glenfarclas its fruity, spicy depth. Alongside sherry and dried fruit are tropical fruit, almond and nutmeg, with citrus adding a brighter accent. Vanilla and dark chocolate complement its full, rounded character. A subtle hint of smoke remains in the background.

This single malt is part of Glenfarclas's classic age-statement range. It is bottled by the distillery and comes in a tube. The 0.7-litre bottle contains whisky at 43% alcohol, with no added colouring.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, fruit notes from sherry and tropical fruit mingle with nutmeg and almond. A light citrus accent, vanilla sweetness and a subtle hint of smoke round out the aromas.
• Palate: The whisky feels full and rounded on the palate. Melon, mango, apricot and ripe peach emerge, followed by ginger, nutmeg and Sichuan pepper. Fruit, spice and a subtle hint of smoke develop slowly.
• Finish: The finish is long and smooth, with chocolate and delicate smoke. Chilli powder and white pepper tingle at first, before drying tannins follow.

Distillery/Bottler:

Glenfarclas Distillery is located near Ballindalloch in Speyside and has belonged to the Grant family since 1865. It distils twice in directly fired stills. For maturation, it uses, among other casks, selected European oak casks that previously held Oloroso sherry. J. & G. Grant owns the distillery and the brand; Glenfarclas bottles the 21-year-old single malt itself.
