Special Features:

The whisky for The Russell Cask #1549 matured for 36 years in a refill sherry butt before being released as a single-cask bottling. Peter, Leonard and Tom Russell selected the cask together; distilled on 21 December 1984, the whisky was bottled in 2021 at its natural cask strength of 50.7%. A total of 402 bottles were produced.

Despite the whisky’s increasing richness, the well-used refill cask left the distillate ample room to develop pronounced fruitiness. Strawberry, lime sorbet, mint, lemon meringue, stewed apple and coconut lead into tropical fruit, dried banana and chocolate cherry. Leather, cinnamon, gentle sherry spice and oak complement the mature character without obscuring the fruit.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: The nose reveals strawberry and lime sorbet, accompanied by gentle mint, lemon meringue, stewed apple, coconut, sweet cinnamon and leather.
• Palate: On the palate, the whisky is silky, rich and creamy, with a slightly dusty nuance alongside tropical fruit, dried banana chips and chocolate cherry.
• Finish: The finish is long and rich, gently influenced by sherry and spice; fine oak adds further weight without obscuring the fruit.

Distillery/Bottler:

Glengoyne has made whisky since 1833. The distillery uses air-dried barley, distils particularly slowly and prepares its oak casks over several years. The Russell Cask #1549 combines this patient approach with 36 years of maturation in a refill sherry butt; Glengoyne released the single malt as an official bottling.

Ian Macleod Distillers has owned Glengoyne since 2003 and manages both the distillery and the brand. The family connection is a central element of this edition: Peter, Leonard and Tom Russell represent three generations of the family behind Ian Macleod Distillers. Cask 1549 was the only cask that all three generations selected together for bottling.
