For Havana Club Añejo 7 Años, continuous ageing links older reserves with subsequent bottlings. Some of the matured rum is held back, aged further and later returned to the blend. This connects successive bottlings, while further ageing deepens the character. Even the youngest rum in the blend has spent at least seven years in cask. Maturation takes place in oak casks that previously held bourbon.

Roasted notes and tobacco meet vanilla, fruit and woody spice. Despite its sweet-scented aromas, the rum tastes relatively dry. It carries the protected designation of origin D.O.P. Cuba and is offered at 40% in a 0.7-litre bottle. It can be enjoyed neat or over ice and also works well in a Cuba Libre.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: Roasted coffee, tobacco leaves, dark chocolate and vanilla shape the nose. Orange marmalade and a hint of gingerbread complement these aromas.
• Palate: The rum is full-bodied on the palate and more dry than sweet. Woody spice accompanies orange marmalade and vanilla fudge, with a delicate note of overripe banana.
• Finish: Black pepper, coffee and vanilla fudge linger through the long finish.

Distillery/Bottler:

The history of Havana Club began in 1934 in Cárdenas, Cuba. Since 1993, Havana Club International S.A., a joint venture between Pernod Ricard and Cuba Ron, has linked Cuban rum production with the brand’s international development. Production is in the hands of the Maestros del Ron Cubano. Their knowledge, passed down through generations, was recognised by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage in 2022.

Don José Navarro developed Añejo 7 Años in 1978, establishing continuous ageing as a defining process for the brand. Havana Club produces rum at Santa Cruz and San José. Built in 2007, the facility in San José de las Lajas lies around 47 kilometres southeast of Havana. Its equipment includes distillation columns, open-air fermentation tanks and ageing warehouses; aromatic aguardiente and lighter rum distillate distilled to a higher strength form the basis of many of the house’s blends.
