Special Features:

A finish in casks previously used for dark rum from Barbados shapes Hyde No.4 President’s Cask. The whiskey first matures in charred ex-bourbon oak casks from Kentucky, then spends a further six months in rum casks that are also charred. Both cask types hold 200 litres. Irish malted barley forms the basis of the whiskey, which is triple-distilled in copper pot stills at a single Irish distillery.

This whiskey is produced in small batches with individually numbered bottles. Its richly sweet, fruity character also includes dark honey, dates and caramelised almonds. It is bottled at 46% alcohol, without chill filtration or added colouring.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: Toffee, cinnamon and sultanas meet a pronounced rum aroma. Sweet, nutty notes are joined by porridge and barley, along with caramelised sugar and tropical fruit.
• Palate: The whiskey is smooth and spicy on the palate. Bittersweet vanilla accompanies toffee, cinnamon, apricots and chocolate, with rum and sultanas lingering.
• Finish: The rum character comes through clearly on the finish. Dark nutty notes and spices shape the aftertaste.

Distillery/Bottler:

Behind Hyde is Hibernia Distillers, founded in 2014 and run by Conor and Alan Hyde. The brand commemorates Douglas Hyde, Ireland’s first president. The company operates as an independent bottler, selecting Irish whiskey and developing its character through maturation and finishing in carefully chosen casks.

Hyde continues the Irish tradition of whiskey bonders, who source spirit from distilleries and mature it themselves in casks. Maturation takes place in Little Island, County Cork. Casks are selected directly from distilleries and bodegas, while regular cask sampling helps determine maturity and the right time for bottling. The mild, Atlantic-influenced climate of south-western Ireland provides the setting for this work.
