Special Features:

The Isle of Harris Single Malt combines the distillery’s lightly peated style with maturation in ex-bourbon casks from Heaven Hill and Buffalo Trace as well as ex-Oloroso sherry casks. Once composed according to the distillery’s recipe, the whisky returns to the casks for at least twelve weeks, allowing the components to marry before bottling.

Butterscotch and cherry pastry give way to light fruits and delicate florals. Buttery caramel, clove and ginger meet the distillate’s dry, stony character and gentle peat smoke. The distillery attributes the warmth, sweetness and mild spice to the interplay between the bourbon and Oloroso casks, while the light peat note adds depth without overpowering the whisky.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: The nose reveals butterscotch and iced cherry pastry. Pastry-like sweetness leads to light fruits, delicate florals and hints of boiled fruit sweets, accompanied by lingering spice warmth.
• Palate: The palate unfolds with rich, buttery caramel and sweet clove and ginger, balanced by the distillate’s dry, stony structure.
• Finish: The finish is long and creamy, fading with a gentle nuance of peat smoke from the Outer Hebrides.

Distillery/Bottler:

The Isle of Harris Distillery stands by the harbour in Tarbert and was founded in 2015 by Anderson Bakewell. From the outset, his concept combined distilling with the aim of creating long-term employment for several generations on Harris, thereby strengthening the resilience of the island community.

For this single malt, the mash is handled gently and fermentation is extended in Tarbert. Maturation takes place a few kilometres away in the coastal settlement of Ardhasaig, where the warehouses are exposed to the North Atlantic. A team trained on Harris assesses the whisky by hand, eye and nose during production and composition; distillation, maturation and marrying all take place in the Outer Hebrides.
