This Kavalan Solist bottling comes from a single selected Spanish Oloroso sherry cask. The whisky was bottled at a cask strength of 55.6%, with its natural colour and without chill filtration; the bottle contains 0.7 litres.

Because the casks in the Solist range are bottled individually, this is not a vatting of several casks. Taiwan’s subtropical climate contributes to its concentrated style. Dark fruit, raisins, dates, dark chocolate, tobacco and spices form the bold side of this Oloroso bottling. Orange, plum, apricot and marzipan, together with roasted cashews and walnuts, provide fruity and nutty accents; vanilla and mocha complete the profile.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, dark berries and sweet dates sit alongside bitter dark chocolate and tobacco. Concentrated raisins add depth, while marzipan appears only as a delicate nuance.
• Palate: Ripe plums and apricots define the palate, while juicy orange brings a lively thread of acidity. Roasted cashews and walnuts complement the fruit with nutty accents.
• Finish: The finish is long and oily; dark chocolate and concentrated raisins combine with nutty spice and black coffee.

Distillery/Bottler:

Kavalan Distillery has produced whisky in Yilan since 2006 and belongs to the family-owned King Car Group. The distillery works with unpeated malted barley and a short middle cut; together with subtropical maturation, this shapes its fruity, floral and concentrated style. The facility had already been completed in 2005.

Solist Sherry and Solist Ex-Bourbon were released in 2009 as the first two single-cask bottlings in the Solist range. For Solist Sherry, selected Spanish Oloroso casks are bottled individually at cask strength. For this distillery bottling, the whisky matured in one such cask and was bottled at exactly 55.6%. As the strength varies from one cask to another, 55.6% is the cask-specific bottling strength of this variant.
