Kyrö Gin takes its rye base from 100% Finnish wholegrain rye. Juniper is joined by locally gathered wild botanicals: birch leaves, meadowsweet, sea buckthorn and cranberry. Together, they give the gin a full-bodied, herbaceous character with peppery rye spice.

Production combines different methods suited to the individual plants: dried herbs are cold-macerated, delicate spices are steam-distilled and fresh ingredients are distilled separately. For the original Napue recipe, the classic botanicals were steeped overnight and distilled in a pot still. The separately produced wild botanical distillates can then be blended to compensate for seasonal differences in the gathered plants.

The gin was launched in 2014 as Napue while the distillery’s first rye whisky was maturing in casks. When the name later changed to Kyrö Gin, its flavour and production methods remained unchanged. In 2015, it won the IWSC award for the best gin for Gin & Tonic. Tonic, plenty of ice, cranberries and a sprig of rosemary complement the recipe in this drink. This bottling contains 0.5 litres at 42.6%.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, gentle citrus notes mingle with mild juniper and birch. Delicate citrus peel aromas and ethereal notes of meadowsweet round out the bouquet.
• Palate: On the palate, the gin is full-bodied, herbaceous and lightly sweet. Peppery spice, a distinct rye presence and ethereal notes of meadowsweet shape its flavour.
• Finish: Peppery rye spice lingers on the tongue in the finish.

Distillery/Bottler:

Kyrö Distillery Company is based in a former dairy in Isokyrö. Five friends developed the idea for a rye distillery during a shared sauna session, after tasting rye whisky together for the first time. Rye had long been an important part of Finnish cuisine; they wanted to use it to make whisky too. In 2014, the still in the old dairy was heated for the first time.

Finnish wholegrain rye remains the foundation of Kyrö’s spirits. The gin provided the young company with income while it waited for its whisky to mature. Following the 2015 award, the gin sold out within two days. The distillery launched its long-awaited Kyrö Malt Whisky in 2019.
