Grain & Embers is the 12-year-old Lagavulin from the 2025 Diageo Special Releases. It is bottled at 56.5%, with a volume of 0.2 litres.

Maturation combined refill casks with European oak butts seasoned with Pedro Ximénez or Oloroso. The edition’s theme brings together toasted grain, artisan bread, raisins, figs and dates alongside smouldering smoke.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: The nose is powerful and phenolic, with smouldering peat, wood ash, soap and plaster. Rock pools and lobster boats shape its maritime character, joined by fresh scallops and oyster shells.
• Palate: The palate is smooth and lightly oily. Pronounced sweetness, dried fruit, savoury spices, salt and peat smoke define the flavour; a little water makes it softer and sweeter.
• Finish: The finish is long and dry. Light smoke, salt and peat linger, while a little water also brings out chilli heat.

Distillery/Bottler:

Lagavulin Distillery makes this single malt on Islay’s south coast near Port Ellen. Founded by John Johnston in 1816, the distillery uses traditional methods and distinctively pear-shaped stills.
