The 2024 release opens Laphroaig’s annual small-batch series of 30-year-old single malts. The whisky matured for three decades in American oak bourbon casks and European oak ex-sherry hogsheads and butts. It was bottled at 45.8%.

Long maturation integrates the peat smoke more gently: rather than dominating the first impression, it develops through citrus, vanilla cream and toffee towards a sooty aftertaste. Bergamot, sweet pastry, fresh thyme and white pepper complement the bright fruit notes. The sherry casks contribute warmth and spice; together with the American oak, they give the whisky added depth without obscuring its Islay character.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: The nose opens with sweet fruit notes, pronounced orange and lemon peel, vanilla cream and toffee with notes of dark sugar syrup. Delicate smoke and warm ash sit behind them.
• Palate: Finer notes of bergamot, sweet pastry and fresh thyme follow on the palate, accompanied by white pepper, oak spice and soft smoke.
• Finish: Smouldering peat smoke and sooty campfire notes linger through the medium-length finish. Medicinal hints, lemon oil and a slightly drying rubbery note follow.

Distillery/Bottler:

Laphroaig Distillery makes this Islay single malt and releases it as an official bottling. The distillery was founded in 1815 on Islay’s south coast. Today, the Laphroaig brand is part of the Suntory Global Spirits portfolio.

Laphroaig uses water from the Kilbride Stream and works with traditional malting floors. Its barley is slowly smoked over Islay peat at a low temperature; the resulting whisky then matures in oak casks by the coast. In this 30-year-old expression, that smoke-led foundation meets American oak and European ex-sherry casks, while the long maturation brings the peat into closer balance with the other flavours.
