Special Features:

Laphroaig Quarter Cask draws on the small casks that once made whisky easier to transport on packhorses. This Islay single malt matures first in ex-bourbon barrels before being transferred to Quarter Casks made from American oak. These smaller casks have a greater internal wood surface area relative to the volume of liquid. This increases interaction with the wood, adding depth and gentle sweetness to the pronounced peat character.

Alongside the peat smoke are hints of coconut, banana and vanilla. The whisky is full-bodied, soft and velvety. It is bottled at 48% and is not chill-filtered.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, powerful, smouldering peat smoke mingles with coconut and banana.
• Palate: The whisky is rich and complex on the palate. Deep smoke meets gentle sweetness.
• Finish: The finish is very long and becomes increasingly dry. Smoke and spice linger, accompanied by sweetness.

Distillery/Bottler:

Laphroaig Distillery was founded in 1815 by Donald and Alexander Johnston on Islay’s south coast. The distillery draws its water from the Kilbride Stream and still operates its own floor maltings, where the barley is turned daily. In the peat-fired kilns, the barley absorbs smoke while still moist, before being dried completely.

For its double distillation, Laphroaig uses three larger copper wash stills and four smaller copper spirit stills. Slow distillation and the high-rising connecting pipes leading to the condensers help hold back heavy oils. Quarter Cask is an official distillery bottling that combines this production style with two-stage maturation in American oak casks.
