This 16-year-old Ledaig is part of the Benchmark Spring 2026 edition. Distilled at Tobermory in 2009, the heavily peated single malt initially matured in bourbon casks before Murray McDavid gave it a four-year finish in red wine barriques from Quinta dos Frades in Portugal’s Douro Valley.

The bottling combines casks 2201176 and 2201178 and comprises 589 bottles of 0.7 litres each. It was bottled in 2026 at 57.5%, without chill filtration or added colouring.

The four-year red wine finish contrasts the powerful coastal peat with berry fruit and violets. Dark chocolate, sweet spices, fruity malt and cigar leaf add further dimensions to the smoky profile.

Distillery/Bottler:

The history of Tobermory Distillery on the Isle of Mull dates back to 1798. It produces two distinctly different single malt styles: unpeated Tobermory and heavily peated Ledaig, the latter forming the basis of this bottling.

Murray McDavid has operated as an independent bottler since 1994, with additional maturation in carefully selected casks becoming a central focus. Its team monitors the casks in the warehouses at Coleburn; for this bottling, it paired Ledaig with red wine barriques from the Douro Valley.
