Volume: 0.7 litres | Alcohol content: 54.1% | Chill filtration: No | Colouring: No
Special Features:
This Speyside single malt matured for 56 years in first-fill sherry hogshead #789. Gordon & MacPhail bottled it in 2022 at 54.1%. Presented in a premium box, the whisky contains no added colouring and is non-chill-filtered.
The design of The Dram Takers range draws on the illustrative art of the Book of Kells. The medieval manuscript inspired the image of two figures raising a glass together.
The aromatic profile develops from stewed raisins and plums through aged leather, toffee with dark sugar syrup, dark chocolate and blood orange to tart raspberry, Demerara sugar and soft liquorice. Dried tobacco, Brazil nut and gentle oak tannins complement the palate, while grapefruit defines the long, spicy finish.
Tasting Notes:
- Nose: The nose opens with rich stewed raisins and plums, followed by aged leather. Toffee with dark sugar syrup and dark chocolate complement fragrant blood orange.
- Palate: On the palate, tart raspberry and Demerara sugar lead to soft liquorice. Dried tobacco is followed by Brazil nut and gentle oak tannins.
- Finish: The finish is full, long and spicy, with lingering grapefruit.
Distillery/Bottler:
When Linkwood produced this distillate in 1966, only the older distillery stood on the outskirts of Elgin; the second facility followed in 1971. Peter Brown founded the distillery in 1821, four years before production began.
Gordon & MacPhail has been active in the whisky trade in Elgin since 1895 and has maintained a close relationship with Linkwood for more than a century. The company focuses on matching spirit with oak, has casks prepared to its own specifications and monitors their development through regular sampling. The whiskies in The Dram Takers range matured in Gordon & MacPhail’s own casks; this Linkwood comes from first-fill sherry hogshead #789.
