Special Features:

This single-cask bottling from The Nine series combines maturation in a Refill American Oak Hogshead with a finish in a 1st Fill Bordeaux Red Wine Hogshead. The whisky initially matured in a previously used American oak Hogshead before moving into a Bordeaux red wine cask being used for whisky maturation for the first time. The edition is designated Cask 1/6 and was distilled in 2010.

The unpeated spirit is distilled in the Inchfad style using traditional Swan Neck Pot Stills. The bottling brings together blackcurrants, spice reminiscent of a clove-studded orange and sweet nectarine. These are followed by impressions of maple sugar, caramelised apple and red liquorice confectionery. The whisky is bottled at 55%, without chill filtration or added colouring.

Tasting Notes:

  • Nose: On the nose, the whisky recalls blackcurrant juice, orange and nectarine.
  • Palate: The palate is full-bodied, with citrus fruit and sweet maple sugar. Toffee and apple emerge behind them, before spicy liquorice leads into the finish.
  • Finish: Fruit notes and gentle spice linger in the long finish.

Distillery/Bottler:

Loch Lomond produces whisky in the Scottish Highlands using two different types of malt still: traditional Swan Neck Pot Stills and Straight Neck Pot Stills with straight necks. Different distillation cut points, various yeast cultures, and both peated and unpeated malted barley allow the distillery to create a broad range of single malt styles. The Nine explores this diversity through selected single casks.

The distillery uses a long fermentation of 92 hours, during which the spirit's underlying fruity character develops. Cask maintenance also takes place on site: its own cooperage replaces damaged staves and cask heads and rechars casks before they are refilled. Master Blender Michael Henry oversees the development of the single malt and single grain ranges, from distillation and maturation through to marrying and bottling.
