Special Features:

This set brings together two ages of MacNair’s Lum Reek. It contains the 21-year-old Blended Malt Scotch Whisky at 48% and the 10-year-old Cask Strength from Batch 1 at 55.4%, each in a 0.7-litre bottle. Both combine single malts from Speyside and Islay with matured GlenAllachie. Neither is chill-filtered or contains added colouring.

For the 21-year-old, blending is followed by further maturation in Spanish sherry casks, French oak and Virgin Oak Casks made from previously unused oak. This allows the whiskies to integrate and take on additional oak influences. The bottling was named World’s Best Blended Malt at the 2020 World Whiskies Awards.

The 10-year-old Batch 1 was released in February 2022 as the range’s first cask-strength bottling. Billy Walker selected the matured single malts and blended them with GlenAllachie. The whisky then underwent further maturation in Spanish sherry casks, wine barriques and Virgin Oak Casks. Only after the final cask selection was the whisky bottled at its natural cask strength of 55.4%.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: Lum Reek 21 Year Old brings together subtle peat smoke and dark chocolate with runny honey and vanilla fudge. Lum Reek 10 Year Old Cask Strength Batch 1 has aromas of smoke, heather honey and ginger, alongside cinnamon, dark sugar syrup and vanilla.
• Palate: The 21-year-old reveals old leather and cedarwood. Gentle peat notes accompany generous cocoa, vanilla pods and sweet spices. Dark chocolate, ginger and citrus fruits lead the palate of the 10-year-old Batch 1. Smoky spices, plantains and tannins add to the flavours.
• Finish: The 21-year-old has a medium-to-long finish. Ashy and spicy impressions emerge while cocoa lingers. The 10-year-old Batch 1 leaves a medium-length finish with soot, ash, chocolate and earthy notes. Raisins, prunes and dates join them, with a delicate oak note remaining at the end.

Distillery/Bottler:

MacNair’s belongs to The GlenAllachie Distillers Company. The brand was repositioned in July 2021 as a Boutique House of Spirits, encompassing Exploration Rum alongside Lum Reek. For the blended malts, Master Blender Billy Walker brings together whiskies from different distilleries; GlenAllachie is one component rather than the sole source.

Walker’s approach combines the selection of matured single malts with a carefully directed second maturation after blending. Rather than stopping at the composition of the blend, he uses selected casks to develop its character further. By 2022, his career already spanned fifty years and included both distilling and blending.
