Micil Spiced Orange Gin brings together Connemara flowers and herbs, orange peel and warming spices. Its starting point is the classic Micil Irish Gin recipe with its 17 botanicals. Orange peel enhances the citrus character, while cloves accentuate the spice. Regional ingredients include bog myrtle, hawthorn berries, heather and bogbean.

Distillation takes place in batches in a hybrid copper still. The botanicals remain in the still throughout distillation to extract their aromatic oils. The combination of regional plants with citrus fruit and spices recalls Galway’s historic trading links with Spain, Portugal and France.

The gin’s flavour combines warming orange notes with heather and floral tones. Sweetness and a slightly tart edge balance each other. It is offered at 42% alcohol in a 0.7-litre bottle.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, orange and juniper mingle with spicy notes, heather and bog myrtle.
• Palate: On the palate, juniper and sweet liquorice meet spicy orange and warm spice notes. A touch of acidity balances the orange sweetness.
• Finish: The long finish is velvety, rounded and spicy.

Distillery/Bottler:

Micil Distillery is based in Galway on Ireland’s west coast. Its name honours Micil Mac Chearra, who began illicitly producing Poitín in Connemara in 1848. His descendants preserved recipes and distilling knowledge across six generations, passing them down orally in the Irish language.

The family also developed its gins from this Poitín tradition. Its connection to the landscape remains tangible: Micil uses hand-gathered flowers and herbs from Connemara among its gin ingredients. Bogbean links the two types of spirit, as this regional plant also features in the family’s traditional Poitín recipe.
