Special Features:

Millstone Special No. 28 combines heavily peated malt with full maturation in tawny port casks. The whisky was distilled on 2 July 2018 and bottled on 8 September 2023 after five years at 46%. The release comprises 3,520 bottles. The malt used has a phenol content of 50 ppm; this figure refers to the malt, not the finished whisky.

The smoke comes from the peated malt. The tawny port casks contribute to the colour and fruity notes, which combine with the delicate peat character. The whisky has no added colouring and is not chill-filtered. Its fresh fruitiness and elegant smokiness define this edition of the Millstone Special series.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: Balanced smoke leads on the nose, accompanied by fresh red fruit and citrus notes. The peat becomes slightly more pronounced over time, while lemon and lime keep it in balance.
• Palate: On the palate, elegant peat notes combine with orange marmalade and Millstone's characteristic spiciness.
• Finish: The finish is long and rich, with elegant, pleasant smokiness.

Distillery/Bottler:

Zuidam Distillers produces whisky under the Millstone brand in Baarle-Nassau, near the Dutch-Belgian border. Fred and Hélène van Zuidam began making liqueurs and genever in 1976. Their sons Patrick and Gilbert later took over the management of the family business. Patrick's ambition to make his own whisky led to the first experimental casks in 1996. The name Millstone refers to the Dutch mills that grind the grain for the whisky.

For Special No. 28, Zuidam uses crystal-clear wort and a slow, seven-day fermentation with M-strain yeast, a brewer's yeast. The spirit is then distilled slowly twice, with a relatively early cut to select the heart of the run. The long fermentation and slow distillation in small copper stills contribute to the fruity character of Millstone whiskies.
