Special Features:

Oloroso sherry casks give this Millstone its dark dried-fruit notes and spicy accents. Made from unpeated malted barley, the single malt matures for at least four years in first- and second-fill Oloroso casks. Its entire maturation takes place in sherry casks, rather than involving a subsequent finish.

Zuidam establishes the foundation for the fruity character before cask maturation: a clear wort undergoes a long, cool fermentation with a combination of brewer's and distiller's yeast. This is followed by slow, gentle distillation. The whisky is distilled twice and bottled at 46% without chill filtration or added colouring. The 0.7-litre bottle is supplied in a gift tube.

The bottles are labelled by hand, with details of the individual whisky entered on the label. Millstone Oloroso won gold at the Wizards of Whisky competition in London in 2019.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: Fresh oranges initially lead on the nose. These quickly develop into richer impressions of stewed peaches and apricots. Raisins and plums then emerge, accompanied by a delicate hint of dried herbs.
• Palate: The whisky is fruity and fresh on the palate. Bitter orange meets pronounced chocolate and raisin notes, while black pepper adds subtle spice.
• Finish: Fruity and spicy impressions linger through the medium-length finish.

Distillery/Bottler:

Zuidam is a family business in Baarle-Nassau on the Dutch-Belgian border. Fred and Hélène van Zuidam began producing liqueurs and genever professionally in 1976. Their sons Patrick and Gilbert now run the company. Patrick pursued the development of a whisky of their own, and the first experimental whisky casks were filled in 1996. This led to the creation of the Millstone brand.

The name Millstone refers to the Dutch mills that grind the grain for the whisky. The distillery's methods include long fermentation and slow distillation in small copper pot stills. Zuidam selects casks specifically for the different Millstone bottlings, with each contributing its own character. The warm, dry conditions in the warehouses result in average annual evaporation of four to six per cent of the cask contents.
