Special Features:

American oak and Moscatel casks shape the double maturation of this Millstone single malt. Special #17 is made by Zuidam from unpeated malted barley. Wine notes and sweetness shape its flavour.

The whisky was distilled on 21 December 2010 and bottled on 4 September 2019 after eight full years of maturation. The edition comprises 2,460 bottles. It is bottled at 46% alcohol in a 0.7-litre bottle with a presentation tube, without chill filtration or added colouring.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: The nose is fresh, initially a little restless. It shows clear wine notes, with burnt and dark sugar in the background.
• Palate: On the palate, it is sweet and lighter than the nose suggests. The wine influence is clear without being overwhelming; the mouthfeel is rather thin.
• Finish: The short to medium-length finish shows sugar, a hint of Moscatel and caramel.

Distillery/Bottler:

Zuidam Distillers is a family business in Baarle-Nassau in the Netherlands, near the Belgian border. Fred and Hélène van Zuidam began making liqueurs and genever in 1976. Their sons Patrick and Gilbert now run the company. Patrick developed its whisky production, with the first experimental whisky casks dating from 1996.

The Millstone name refers to the Dutch windmills that grind the grain for the whisky. The grain for Special #17 was also processed this way. For its Millstone whiskies, the distillery uses a seven-day fermentation and slow distillation in small copper pot stills. This approach encourages the spirit’s fruity character. Zuidam then shapes each bottling through its selection of different oak casks.
