Momotarō Akainu features Japanese-inspired botanicals: Yamazakura cherry, Amaou strawberry, yuzu and matcha tea complement the juniper. Fruit shapes its character, while citrus freshness, spice and tea broaden its aromatic profile. The gin is offered at 42% in a 0.5-litre bottle.

The selected botanicals undergo slow maceration followed by gentle distillation. This gives the ingredients time to release their aromas. The edition is dedicated to Akainu, the red dog and loyal animal companion of the hero Momotarō. The Japanese legend is also reflected in the bottle design with its red colour gradient.

A fresh, citrus-led tonic water makes a suitable partner for a gin and tonic. A strip of lemon zest or a lemon slice complements the fruity aromas.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: Fruity notes of Yamazakura cherry and Amaou strawberry lead the nose.
• Palate: On the palate, cherry and strawberry meet the fresh citrus note of yuzu. Juniper adds spice, while matcha tea rounds out the flavour profile.
• Finish: The gin has a soft, velvety finish.

Distillery/Bottler:

Destille Kaltenthaler is located in Westhofen in Rheinhessen and is run as a third-generation family business. The distiller behind Momotarō is Felix Georg Kaltenthaler, whose interest in spirits began at his parents’ wine estate. Alongside Momotarō, the distillery’s own brands include Kernstein and Revolte Rum. With Momotarō, it draws on Japanese ingredients and stories to create gin in Germany.
